چکیده

Although we normally think about soilless culture as a modern practice, growing plants in containers aboveground has been tried at various times throughout the ages. The Egyptians did it almost 4000 years ago. Wall paintings found in the temple of Deir el Bahari (Naville 1913) showed what appears to be the first documented case of container-grown plants (Fig. 1.1). They were used to transfer mature trees from their native countries of origin to the king’s palace and then to be grown this way when local soils were not suitable for the particular plant. It is not known what type of growing medium was used to fill the containers, but since they were shown as being carried by porters over large distances, it is possible that materials used were lighter than pure soil. Starting in the seventeenth century, plants were moved around, especially from the Far and Middle East to Europe to be grown in orangeries, in order to supply aesthetic value, and rare fruits and vegetables to wealthy people. An orangery is ‘a sheltered place, especially a greenhouse, used for the cultivation of orange trees

Fungal Disinfection by Nanofiltration in Tomato Soilless Culture

Principally, plants grown in soilless culture may be attacked by the same pests and diseases as cultivated traditionally in soil. The most destructive phytopathogens are fungi, such as Phythium, Phytophthora and Fusarium, followed by viruses, bacteria and nematodes. We investigated effect of carbon nanotube filters on disease management of soilless culture. Tomato seedlings transplant in plasti...

Controlled Environment Agriculture

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA)/greenhouse vegetable production is one of the most exacting and intense forms of all agricultural enterprises. In combination with greenhouses, hydroponics or soilless cultivation is becoming increasingly popular. It is high technology and can be capital intensive. CEA is highly productive, conservative of water and land and protective of the environment...

Piriformospora indica Culture Filtrate and Biofertilizer (Nitrokara) Promote Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) Growth and Morpho-physiological Traits in an Aeroponic System and Soil Culture

In two independent experiments, acclimatized chicory plants were transferred into an aeroponic system and to the soil. Then, the effects of biofertilizer (Nitrokara) and culture filtrate of Piriformospora indica were investigated on some plant characteristics in both aeroponic and soil cultivation system under greenhouse conditions. The plants were foliar sprayed with three different biofertili...

Phytochemical and Quality Attributes of Strawberry Fruit under Osmotic Stress of Nutrient Solution and Foliar Application of Putrescine and Salicylic Acid

The moderating role of salicylic acid (SA) and putrescine (PUS) as plant growth regulators (PGRs), on the growth parameters and phytochemical and qualitative characteristics of strawberry fruit 'Selva' under osmotic stress was investigated under soilless culture. The osmotic potential (salinity) of the nutrient solution containing different NaCl concentrations (0, 7.5, 15, 30 and 45 mM) and fol...

Feasibility of using Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) Root Residue as Growth Medium and Its Effect on Growth Indices and Nutrients Uptake in Soilless Culture of Strawberry

Licorice root pulp is an organic waste which may be used as a growth medium in soilless culture. A research was conducted in a completely randomized design with 8 replications to assess the efficiency of licorice root pulp as a growth medium for strawberry plant (Selva cv.) under greenhouse conditions for three months. In this experiment, four ratios (v/v) of perlite:licorice root pulp (75:25, ...
